Juneteenth is the oldest known United States celebration of the end of enslavement.  It commemorates June 19, 1865–the day that Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas. He told the enslaved of their emancipation more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
